Joshua excellent guide who ensured a smooth and enjoyable trip. No problems and everything was done to ensure we were as comfortable as possible. Permits were arranged to visit Wuyipeng. Joshua also knew all of the birding sites as he had led numerous birding trips before.

Wolong

About 3 hours or so from Chengdu. We based ourselves at Sha Wan and except for one night at Wuyipeng travelled daily to sites. This is not difficult now that a new concrete road has been completed. It would have been preferable to spend another night or two at Wuyipeng but there was some doubt as th whether we could stay there at all due to the immenent demolition of the research centre. It was due to be rebuilt and it may be possible to stay there in the future. Permission is required to stay at the research centre and this was arranged by Joshua. By far the best forest is around Wuyipeng and we found the birding excellent. Wuyipeng is reached by way of a good trail that starts a few km above Sha Wan. Close to Sha Wan several visits were made to the hillside above Sha Wan town. The habitat is not good although we managed to see some good birds here. Higher up the valley we spent a morning in the San Shen Valley and more time at high altitude. A major highlight was a walk away from the road to another valler where we eventually found Chinese Monal. This was arranged by Joshua who talked to local people who knew the whereabouts of this bird and organized one of them to guide us there.

7 May Arrived Chengdu 13.30. Drive to Sha Wan, Wolong arriving at 17.00. Birding on hillside above town until 20.00. Overnight Sha Wan.

8 May Departed Sha Wan 05.30 and drive to Balang Shan arriving at 06.45. Birding down towards Beimuping until 14.00 when thick fog caused us to drop lower. Walked down the road below Beimuping until 15.30 when birding was abandoned due to heavy rain. Overnight Sha Wan.

9 May Departed Sha Wan 06.00 and walked up to Wuyipeng arriving at the top of the hill at 07.30. Arranged to spend the following night at the research station and spent the day birding the trails before retuning to the road at 19.00. Overnight Sha Wan.

10 May Birding hillside above Sha Wan from 07.00 until 09.00. Drive to bottom of track to Wuyipeng and climb up to the research centre. Spent rest of the day birding the trails at Wuyipeng. Overnight Wuyipeng.

11 May Birding tracks at Wuyipeng before walking down to road arriving at 19.30.

12 May Departed Sha Wan 05.00 and pick up local guide and drive to Wood Snipe site 3km. above Beimuping arriving 06.00. At 07.30 start walking away from road to a valley where Chinese Monal were reecntly reported. Arrive at site about 11.30 and stay until 17.00 before returning to Sha Wan. Overnight Sha wan.

13 May Birding hillside above Sha Wan from 06.00 until 08.30. Drive to Beimuping arriving 10.00 and walk down road until 18.00. Overnight Sha Wan.

14 May Departed Sha Wan 06.00 and drive to San Shen Valley arriving 06.45. Birding valley until 13.00. Return to Sha Wan and spent from 17.30 until 19.00 birding hillside above town. Overnight Sha Wan.

15 May Departed Sha Wan 06.30 and drove via Wenchuan to Hong Yuan. Most of the day spent travelling but a small amount of birding on the Tibetan Plateau near Hong Yuan. Overnight Hong Yuan.

16 May Departed Hong Yuan at 08.00 and drove to Rouergai arriving 19.00. Frequent birding stops along the road. Overnight Rouergai.

17 May Departed Rouergai at 07.30 and drove to Daba Lake. All day birding in the vicinity of the lake before returning to Roergai at 19.00. Overnight Rouergai.

18 May Departed Rouergai at 06.45 and drove to Songpan arriving at 19.00. Frequent birding stops along the road. Overnight Songpan.

19 May Departed Songpan at 07.00 and drove to Gong Gang Ling. Birded the valley before the pass and forest along the road just after the pass before driving to the entrance to Juizhaigou National Park, arriving at 16.00. Took bus to Nuorilang and walked to Mirror Lake before returning to Nuorilang for the night.

20 May Departed Nuorilang at 05.30 and walked to Pearl Shoal Waterfall. Birded in the valley behind the waterfall before walking back to Nuorilang. Late afternoon birding in the vicinity of Nuorilang. Overnight Nuorilang

21 May Departed 06.30 for the Primeval Forest. Birded there until 16.00 before returning to Nuorilang. Evening birding in the vicinity of Nuorilang. Overnight Nuorilang.

22 May Departed 06.30 for Long Lake but rain deterred us from exploring the forest above the lake. Rain eased by mid morning and we walked slowly down the road to Nuorilang. Overnight Nuorilang.

23 May Departed 05.30 and walked up the road towards Long Lake to the valley 5km. above Nuorilang. Birded there until 11.00 then by bus to Long Lake. Walked up into the forest above the lake returning to Nuorilang at 17.00.

40 at Sha Wan on 14/5 and 4 between Wenchuan and Hong Yuan on 15/5. Common at Juizhaigou with at least 10 birds recorded most days. All birds were race humei.

Two-barred Warbler Phylloscopus plumbeitarsus

40 at Beimuping on 13/5. Common at higher elevations at Juizhaigou, especially around the Primeval Forest and Long Lake. All birds were race plumbeitarsus.
